Muhammad al-Ma'rawiyyah, dalam al-Marx-Islâmiyyah wa al-Qurân, menuduh “Shahrour dibayar oleh zionis”. Yusuf Qardhawi, dalam program televisi Islamic Law and Life, menyatakan “Shahrour benar-benar menciptakan agama baru”. Ada tiga paradigma dalam memahami diskursus ini. Pertama, paradigma simbiotik. Menurut pandangan ini, relasi agama-negara bersifat timbal balik. Artinya, agama membutuhkan instrumen dakwah berupa negara, karena melalui negara yang terbentuk secara formalistik dalam wadah negara Islam, maka agama dapat mengaplikasikan ajarannya. Penganut paradigma ini adalah mayoritas Ahli al-Sunnah dan mayoritas Muktazilah serta Murji`ah. Kedua, paradigma integralistik. Dalam perspektif ini, relasi agama-negara berkait-kelindan. Cakupan ajaran agama meliputi aturan politik dan tatanan negara, sehingga, Islam sebagai sebuah agama, dapat diartikan pula sebagai lembaga politik dan kenegaraan dengan doktrin "inna al-Islâm Dîn wa Dawlah". Penganut paham ini adalah sekte Syi‘ah. Mereka mengkategorikan imâmah sebagai salah satu dari rukun iman.&lt;br /&gt;Ketiga, paradigma sekularistik. Paradigma ini memberikan garis disparitas antara agama dan negara karena, menurut paradigma ini, agama sama sekali tidak mewajibkan mendirikan negara. Agama hanya memberikan nilai etik-moral dalam membangun tatanan masyarakat dan negara. Penganut paradigma ini menyatakan tidak ada 'dalil eksplisit' dalam al-Qur’an maupun hadits yang menunjukkan tentang hukum mendirikan negara. Paradigma ini antara lain dianut oleh sebagian Khawarij dan Abi Bakar al-Asham serta Hisyam al-Futhi dari sekte Muktazilah. Pada era modern ini, paradigma sekularistik kembali digelorakan oleh Ali Abd al-Raziq dalam bukunya al-Islam wa Ushul al-Hukm. Dia juga sering dijuluki intelektual wilayah ‘tak terpikirkan’ (al-la mufakkar fih/L’impensê). Lahir pada 1 Februari 1928 di Tourirt-Mimoun, Kabilia, Aljazair. Sejak tahun 1961 Arkoun diangkat menjadi dosen di Universitas Sorbonne, Paris. Salah satu karyanya yang sangat berpengaruh adalah Tarikhiyyat al-Fikr al-Islami. Ketika mayoritas umat Islam berkencan dengan tradisi keilmuan Islam dengan paradigma teosentris, maka Arkoun mengencani dengan pendekatan antroposentris. Baginya, tradisi tafsir, ushul fiqh, fiqh, dan seterusnya adalah produk pemikiran yang memiliki historisitas dan tidak transendental. Oleh sebab itu, ia harus dikaji secara historis. Di sisi lain, Arkoun juga berusaha melancarkan kritik argumentatif terhadap orientalis dengan pisau kritik yang disebut "Islamologi aplikatif".
